The 2000 Water Sciences Graduate Fellowships
The Michigan State University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (MSU/CANR) invites applicants for three Ph.D candidate Water Sciences Fellowships to be awarded for three years beginning in the 2000 academic year. The fellowships are supported through a grant from the cooperative State Research Service Higher Education Program, United States Department of Agriculture.
EFFECTIVE DATES: August 31, 2000 May 31, 2004
STIPEND: $22,000 per year for three years plus an annual allowance for tuition, and medical insurance
ELIGIBILITY: The successful candidate must: 1) have a B.S. or M.S. degree in a water science related academic discipline, 2) not already be enrolled in a Ph.D. program at MSU, and 3) be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Applications are especially encouraged from women and minorities.
THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM: The interdisciplinary program is designed for Fellows to initiate innovative research that emphasize systems science/computer simulation as it relates to various aspects of the water sciences. Research components of the MSU/CANR Water Science Program include, but are not limited to the following areas.
Systems Modeling and Simulation
Agricultural Water and/or Waste Management
Soil Chemical/Biological Reactions
Groundwater Flow and Chemical Movement
Surface Water Flow and Chemical Movement
Risk Assessment, Legal and Economic Analysis
Contaminant Remediation and/or abatement
FACULTY: Faculty expertise associated with the project includes: hydrology, soil-water reactions, environmental isotope analysis, irrigation, biodegradation, biomethylation, bioaccumulation, risk assessment, socioeconomics, and environmental law. They provide Fellows with the opportunity for broad and rigorous training in basic research and creative application of computer modeling and simulation of water related problems.
ADMINISTRATION: The program is directed by an interdepartmental committee of faculty who represent the departments of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Crop and Soil Sciences, Entomology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Geological Sciences, and Resource Development, as well as interdepartmental programs.
