MICHIGAN SOYBEAN PERFORMANCE
TRIALS
Michigan State University will conduct
performance evaluations of conventional and herbicide resistant (Roundup
Resistant only) varieties that are submitted to us by private
companies. The results of the trial will be published in a performance
report sponsored by the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee. The 2009
Michigan Soybean Performance Report is distributed to Soybean Association
members, grain elevators, and as a supplement to the Michigan
Farm News. Data can also be accessed at www.css.msu/varietytrials/.
PROCEDURES
All performance trial plots will consist of six
15-inch rows, 20 feet long. Fourteen feet of the center four rows will
be harvested for yield. All Roundup Resistant soybeans will
be tested in a separate trial at all locations.
Each location will have four replications and will be planted as a lattice
design. While Michigan State University will attempt to plant, maintain,
and harvest nine locations, we cannot be held responsible for acts of
nature that may prevent us from accomplishing these objectives and cannot
refund any fees if we fail to collect data from the number of locations
upon which the fees are based.
In addition to the performance trials, MSU will
be testing soybean cultivars and lines for susceptibility to white mold
(Sclerotinia stem rot). Cultivars and lines must be entered in
either the central and/or southern variety trial to be entered in
the white mold trial. The white mold trial will be grown at one
location (Ingham County) with four replications. The Ingham County trial
site will be inoculated with white mold sclerotia and irrigated to promote
infection. The entries will be tested in plots planted 20 feet long, 6-rows
wide with a 15-inch row spacing. Each plot will be evaluated for disease
severity. Fourteen feet of the center four rows will be harvested for
yield. LOCATIONS AND FEES
The locations for the southern trials are Lenawee,
Hillsdale, St. Joseph (irrigated) and Ingham counties. The locations for
the central trials are Saginaw, Sanilac, Allegan and Ingham counties.
The location for the white mold trial is Ingham County. A variety
may be entered in the southern trials for $300, the central trials for
$300, or both trials for $600. The entry fee for the white mold trial will be $150 for each cultivar
or line in addition to the $300 fee for entering either the southern or
central variety trial.SEED AND SHIPPING INSTRUCTIONS
