As announced at the March 10, 2010 Michigan State University Crop-O-Rama competitions, there will not be a 2011 Crop-O-Rama due to the rebuilding of the Plant and Soil Science Building Auditorium and construction of the new research building adjoining the Plant and Soil Science Building. We plan to resume Crop-O-Rama when the construction is complete, likely in 2012-2013. Thank you for your past support of the Crop-O-Rama program and we look forward to working with you again in the near future. If you have any questions please contact Dr. Karen Renner, (renner@msu.edu); Dr. Wesley Everman,(everman@msu.edu); or Dr. Kurt Thelen (thelenk3@msu.edu).
Crop-O-Rama 2010
Crop-O-Rama was held March 10, 2010 during the Michigan State University Agriculture and Natural Resource Week and the State FFA Convention. This educational event for 4-H
and FFA
students included individual and team competitions involving middle school and high school students from across the state in the following areas: crop weed and seed identification, soils judging and land use, an agronomic quiz bowl, the heroes in agriculture speech and essay contests, and science in agriculture educational exhibits.
This year 15 schools with a grand total of 230+ registered students participated in Crop-O-Rama. Over 25 teams consisting of Junior and Senior High school students competed in: Soils Judging and Land Use, Crop and Weed Identification, and Quiz Bowl. There were a total of 49 poster displays that participated in the Science in Agriculture Educational Exhibit Competition, and 24 Heroes in Agriculture Speech and Essay contestants. The five concurrent competitions ran from 8-11:00a.m., concluding with a pizza and pop luncheon awards presentation from 11:15 a.m. -12:15 p.m. (see attached list of winners). Additional highlights included recognition of the teachers who brought the most students, and other fun raffle drawings:
- Advisor with the most Jr./Middle School students (grades 6-8): Carrie Carl, Hastings Middle School (8)
- Advisor with the most High School students (grades 9-12): Kyle Fiebig of Montague FFA (30 students)
This invaluable event serves as an educational tool to promote the agriculture industry to our youth as they prepare and study for their future careers. It is a great way for students to gain exposure in different areas of agronomy as well as meet other students from 4-H
and FFA
programs in Michigan.
